Picture This! How to Make Pictorial Art Quilts - zoom or in-person

Have you ever wanted to make a representational quilt but you didn’t have a photo of that scene or person? I’ll take you through the process I use to make my wonderful realistic quilt images using a variety of photo sources and collage techniques, plus the key tool to getting all those visuals to work together. If you can dream it, you can do it!

Designing with Painted Tyvek - zoom or in-person

A lowly mailing envelope might become your new favorite “fabric”. In this presentation you’ll learn how the durable material known as Tyvek can be painted and manipulated in a variety of ways to add dimensional embellishments to your art quilts. Painted Tyvek is one of the techniques I demonstrated on Quilting Arts TV and represents “up-cycling” at its best. This inspirational and informative presentation provides so much detail, it’s nearly a workshop.

Painted Tyvek Koi Fish

This class gives you hands-on experience with Tyvek 2 ways - we'll texture, paint and stitch background circles and swirls, then custom paint an original Koi fish each as unique as you are. Once you learn the technique the possibilities for this upcycled embellishment are endless Class project approx. 16" x 16”

 

Dandelion Art Quilt

Learn the elements of art quilting while preparing this charming 20" x 20" Applique Dandelion Quilt top. We'll cover fabric selection, fabric shading, best fusible web for applique and for shadows, hand stitching, using markers for details and much, much, more in this fabulous fun class! Quilting will be discussed, then completed outside of class.

 

MiPhone Your Phone bag

My most popular original pattern. This wonderful cross body bag comes in 3 sizes and includes a pocket you can customize to hold your cell phone. Design includes pen pockets on the side, more pockets on the back and a roomy center section to hold all your essentials. Most students finish in a 1 day class.

Shaded Holly and berry wreath - zoom option

This is my favorite technique and the one I use most often on my art quilts. Learn how to transform your applique from the ordinary on the left to the extraordinary on the right using highlights and shadows. We’ll go step by step as you learn to use paint and markers to add realistic details that create dimension while making this beautiful Holiday Wreath. No sewing will be done in class, finishing the raw edge applique at home to complete as a wall hanging or pillow will be discussed.  Wreath diameter 16″

You know coloring is great fun! Did you know you can color your quilts? Of all the supplies available for art quilts by far my favorite and the easiest to use is pencil colors. More precise than crayons, easier to control and blend than inks and paints. Add that they are inexpensive and with the application of “magic elixir” permanent on fabric, what’s not to love! Come have the fun of reacquainting yourself with the joys of simple coloring. If you have learned to “color INSIDE the lines” you already have all the skills you need to launch right in and start creating! Kit contains everything needed for the class. Students choose from approx. 12 designs pre-printed on cotton fabric that can be finished at home as a 12” X 12” mini quilt.

Which witches boot

We will be using this delightful Crab-apple Hill pattern designed for crayon tinting but making it much more vibrant by “coloring” the fabric with colored pencils. Learn how to transfer designs, stabilize the fabric and used colored pencils and permanently seal them into the fabric to make this fun Halloween wall quilt. We will work on the center “colored” section only in class. The pattern includes instructions for the pieced borders to be done at home.

Embellished Cork Journal Covers

We will use stamping, stenciling, painting and markers to create a unique journal cover you can use for years. Learn how versatile and easy to sew cork fabric is while making this fun and useful project. Perfect for journaling, pet records (my dog Stitch’s book is shown) daily to-do lists and much, much more! Journal is included. Simple final sewing can be done outside of class.

Nygcd (not your grannies churn dash) - zoom option

Fabulous and Fast 2 color quilt. This is not your grannies churn dash! This churn dash variation has a modern graphic look that everyone loves but used to be a huge hassle to make. Now I’ve  re-engineered it to take advantage of today rotary methods with no more half-square triangles. Now a row quilt on the diagonal I’ll have you speeding through this beauty using strip sets, nested seams, chain piecing. All the things we know make for a fast quilt.  Grannie never had it this good! Can be made in 3 bed sizes or as a throw.

The durable “fabric” known as Tyvek can be painted and manipulated in a variety of ways to add dimensional embellishments to your art quilts. Like in the leaves of this wall hanging. This is “up-cycling” at its best. Offered as a project class “Pumpkin with painted Tyvek leaves” or a process class where participants make fabric for their own future projects.

Prairie Points and Patches - Zoom option

One of my original patterns I like to think of this table topper as my table topper for piecers, with prairie points to finish the edges there is no binding and the top is quilted with buttons! We will cover fundamentals of cutting, piecing and trimming up half square triangle units as well as how to interlace the prairie points for a perfect fit every time.

Harvest Scarecrow - zoom option

Shading and shadow are what give the things we see form and shape. In this class we will be adding detail and dimension to this charming harvest scarecrow applique design with fabric markers and paints. This is the technique I use most often for my award winning art quilts. Available as a 1 or 2 day class. For a 1 day class we work on the scarecrow and pumpkin “fabric doll” only and background thread painting and quilting is discussed. For a 2 day class most students can finish all the painting, stitching and borders to complete their wall hanging.
